Stephen Beville & Jonathan Storer Duet Concert "Mirrors & Meditations" Recital for Piano & Violin Church of the Sacred Heart Friday 26 May 2017

Violin: Jonathan Storer
Piano: Stephen Beville

Frédéric Chopin: Two Nocturnes Opus 27
Piano: Stephen Beville
Following his debut solo concert at the Cathedral Chapter House, Stephen Beville returned to the stage on Friday evening for a second piano concert - but this time with a new and exciting feature. Violinist Jonathan Storer joined him to play duets and solo violin.

The concert at The Church of the Sacred Heart in South Street opened with two extremely moving nocturnes, and a thrilling ballade, by Frédéric Chopin, played by Stephen on a the church's delightful baby grand. Stephen's concentration was intense. Without music he played all three pieces from memory with a wealth of style and interpretive elegance.

Then special guest, violinist Jonathan Storer, took over to play the première of a piece for solo violin - composed by Stephen.

Introducing Violin
Jonathan Storer
Both musicians trained at the Royal Academy of Music and continued their studies at the Royal Northern College of Music before moving to Germany to follow their careers - in neighbouring towns. However, they studied at different times, and never met - until Stephen stumbled upon a music project that Jonathan was running in Fore Street here in Exeter.

Stephen and Jonathan began to work together, and Jonathan was very enthusiastic about Stephen's composition for solo violin, "Monodrama". In the style of a Thespian Greek Drama, the dialogue and action are all presented by a single actor, in this case a violinist with just his violin and bow with which to communicate with the audience.

Stephen's hand-written score was fabulously complicated. In fact, the photocopy of the original was well covered by revisions and detailed instructions. The 'voices' were endlessly fascinating. Some were strident and emotional, while others whispered in the harmonic range. Plucking and using the back of the bow introduced what appeared to be quite distinct characters and at one point the bow was abandoned completely - a chair had been placed ready.

Stephen Beville: "Monodrama"
Jonathan had prepared thoroughly, and allowed a week or more before the concert for 'reminiscence' to enhance his grasp and feeling for the piece. Nevertheless, it was necessary to line up the whole piece on seven or eight music stands - with a chair placed under just the right page for his pizzicato passage. As Jonathan slowly made his way along the huge display of music, the audience followed with rapt attention to every detail. An unforgettable classical tale, beautifully performed.

Extremely Complex
As the beauty of 'Monodrama' sank in, Stephen joined Jonathan at the piano for two more pieces by Arvo Pärt. These Estonian minimalist pieces were the perfect complement to Stephen's composition "Monodrama". "Fratres" involved deliciously lively arpeggios for the Violin, with harmonic top notes evoking a deep sense of tenderness. Interrupted by a deep chord on the piano, the violin enters into a soft and tentative dialogue, incredibly sensitive, and only slowly building in tempo and energy, before the piano introduces a return to the fevered arpeggios - this time with a soft underpinning of piano chords. The interaction between Stephen and Jonathan was amazing to see and hear as they played out another moving drama. A sensational piece.

Arvo Pärt"Spiegel im Spiegel"
"Spiegel im Spiegel" (Mirror in a Mirror) tested Jonathan in a different way. For Stephen's many pages of piano score, there was just one page for the violin - showing a series of single notes  Each was drawn out almost inexorably, and with ecstatic sweetness, while Stephen maintained a slow, and painstakingly precise accompaniment of piano arpeggios. The most disciplined pieces so far (and that really is saying something), this simple but overwhelmingly expressive piece demonstrated both the great skill of both musicians and their perfect coordination and cooperation - after only a few months collaboration.

During the interval, the incumbent at Sacred Heart, Father John Deany - who was thrilled to have such a special performance as his very first recital in the church - provided free wine and food. While enjoying this spread, the audience members were able to study Stephen's manuscript in details (still on its many music stands), an experience as fascinating as hearing Jonathan's performance.

Ludwig van Beethoven:
"Kreutzer" Sonata - Andante
The second part of the concert was somewhat shorter. Stephen and Jonathan played just one work - Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata. Although much more 'classical' in style, Beethoven's masterpiece suited the mood of the evening perfectly. Both performers delighted and astounded their audience all over again with a brilliant tour de force of virtuoso playing. Two fabulous prestos are interspersed by an equally outrageous allegro.

Listeners had heard the final presto on Soundart Radio's 'Classical Journey Redux' earlier in the day, which gave some indication of what to expect. In the flesh, the "Kreutzer" was even more exhilarating. The unassuming looking baby grand has a quite magnificent tone (especially in Stephen's hands) and the combined sound of piano and violin carries perfectly in the intimate and inspiring setting of the nave of the Sacred Heart, with its lavish ornamentation and long spiritual history.

Presto!
Many thanks to Father Deany for opening up his church to the general public for a concert in a such a spectacular venue. And congratulations on such a spectacular choice of performers. Father Deany is keen to continue with more concerts at the church - a sentiment which I very much endorse.

Stephen Beville and Jonathan Storer have plans to continue their work together, and we can look forward to further concerts in the near future. Most important, Jonathan has suggested that he would like to give another public performance of "Monodrama" - a unique experience not to be missed!

Exeter Chorale
Musical Director: John Draisey
Afternoon Tea Concert: "In Praise of Light"
Church of St Michael & All Angels, Mount Dinham
Sunday 18 June

Basking in the summer sunshine, tempered by the refreshing coolness of St Michael's Church, and enjoying an afternoon of sensational choral music with organ accompaniment - what a splendid way to enjoy one of the hottest days of the year! John Draisey directed the Exeter Chorale while former conductor, Dr Nigel Browne (who is leaving to become a music examiner), provided organ accompaniment - for the few pieces that were not sung a cappella.

Sixteen sensational voices combined to perform thirteen songs, ancient and modern, all in celebration of "Light". On Thursday evening they will repeat most of the programme at Sidholme Music Room in Sidmouth - where the significance of these choices will become apparent. At John MacGregor's "Sidholme Organ Celebration Week" proceeds from their performance will go towards the renovation of the chandeliers (see below) as part of an on-going schedule of benefit events to raise money to maintain the beautiful Sidholme Music Room as a local community resource.

At St Michael's baroque classics, like Thomas Tallis'"O Nata Lux" and Johann Sebastian Bach's "O Jesus Christ, Light of My Life" were back-to-back with modern masterpieces like James MacMillan's exultant "O Radiant Dawn". There were also pieces for organ played by Dr Nigel Browne and John Draisey. After the lavish feast laid on during the interval, John and Nigel played a delightful duet on piano and organ respectively - Charles-Marie Widor's "Serenade" - while the choir members digested the meal they had shared with the audience.

One rather outstanding moment came during Alex Roth's "Sol Justitiae". Soprano Anne Draisey retired into the transept, but was still heard adding a very precise and resonant melody which echoed around the whole church. Both Anne and her opposite number in the second soprano section, Rachel Johnson, sang with impressive joyousness, especially in Edward Elgar's "Ave Maris Stella" where the two sections (and the altos) took turns to pick up the tune.

Also included in the programme were "Evening Hymn" by Henry Balfour Gardiner (great-uncle of John Eliot Gardiner), "Hail Gladdening Light" by Charles Wood, "Lux Aurumque" by Eric Whitacre, "Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace" by Samuel Wesley (with delightful sections for the two tenors Jo Farquarson& Richard Barnes), "Light of My Soul, Arise" by Robert Lucas de Pearsall, "La Nuict Froide et Sombre" by Orlande de Lassus, "Ecco Mormorar L'Onde" by Claudio Monteverdi (which opened with more beautiful tenor singing, echoed by the altos Jill Green, Deborah Hamilton, Jacqueline Lightband and Penny McDonald).

On the organ, Nigel played the Prelude on "O Lux Beata Trinitas" by Matthias Weckmann during the first half, and John played  "Holy is the True Light" by Willaim Henry Harris and, towards the end of the programme,  the Prelude on "Lucis Creator Optime" by Flor Peeters. The whole recital ended as it began, with the music of Thomas Tallis - "Glory to Thee, My God, This Night".

Throughout the performance, John Draisey not only conducted but also introduced each piece with something witty and informative to say about each piece. The whole experience, with music spanning several centuries and many countries, was spectacular and uplifting and brought infinitely more light into an already sun-drenched afternoon.

Music at St Michael's Mount Dinham continues on Thursday 20 July. when there are plans for the Choir of St James the Greater from Leicester to give a recital of liturgical music as part of their summer tour. Dr Nigel Browne will be giving a talk on Devon Organ Builders at Sidholme Music Room on Tuesday 20 June, and Exeter Chorale will give a slightly abridged reprise of their "In Praise of Light" concert on the evening of Thursday 22 June (details of those two Sidholme events below).

COLOURS OF LOVE
Musical Director: Andrew Daldorph

East Devon Choral Society in full voice
(Photograph: Mike Brett)
The East Devon Choral Society are well known for their spectacular performances of baroque and classical masterpieces at Tiverton Baptist Church, with full orchestra and Colin Pettet playing the impressive Willis organ.

For this weekend's concert the choir sang with only minimal accompaniment. Director Andrew Daldorph demonstrated his amazing ability to play complicated melodies on the piano from a standing position, while simultaneously conducting a full choir.

Johann Pachelbel: "Canon & Gigue"
Piano: Andrew Daldorph
In a new departure, Andrew had also done away with musical manuscripts and songsheets. Every song was learned by ear and sung from memory - with everyone's attention firmly fixed on the Andrew for direction.

The change was immediately noticeable, with the relationship between conductor and choir much more visible to the audience than ever before. Every pair of eyes was looking up and outwards sharing their animation and excitement with the audience.

The first three numbers were from the renaissance, and eased the choir into unscripted song.

Thelonious Monk: Blue Monk
Andrew Daldorph   Chris Gradwell

Verity Stroud
Greensleeves is well known, and the men concentrated on a wordless continuo. Orlando Gibbons'"Silver Swan" has a more complicated lyric, with counterpoint, but ironically relates the misconception that swans themselves do not sing - until they are about to die. Andrew also had some fun with Johann Pachelbel's "Canon& Gigue" for violins and continuo. He had arranged this as a beautiful vocalise for multiple voices, with no words at all. The choir worked their magic deftly, sending waves of pure delicious sound wafting over the audience, to the astoundingly delicate accompaniment of Andrew's piano playing. What a lovely opening to a concert - with the promise of much more to come.

Drums: Steve Douglas
The choir then had a chance to take a rest, as Andrew was joined by an informal jazz band convened for the evening. Steve Douglas played the drums and Chris Gradwell played the tenor saxophone in a smooth and lively version of Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk" with Andrew playing the piano, and a slightly mysterious guest playing the electric bass guitar.

Tenor Saxophone:
Chris Gradwell
The mystery was soon resolved, as Andrew introduced Verity Stroud, one of his music students at Exeter School - and a very accomplished one. Verity is a Grade VIII piano student, as well as guitarist. She also plays the bassoon - and had been bassoon soloist in a performance of Mozart's "Bassoon Concerto in B flat" earlier the same week.

Verity's main contribution to the evening was still to be revealed. Andrew has been Verity's singing teacher, and came to realise that she has the perfect voice, and temperament, to perform his own compositions for jazz band and voice. Together they have made an album of classic songs and Andrew's own compositions.

Verity Stroud
"On You Beloved Eyes"
With Steve, Chris and Andrew providing a emotive introduction and accompaniment, she sang the title track from the album: "On You, Beloved Eyes", while accompanying herself on bass guitar. Her voice is very sensual, and blends perfectly with the instruments of a jazz quartet.

Before the interval there was also time for two more of Andrew's jazz numbers, "It'sYou My Love" and "Since You Are Here". The percussionist on the album is Gary Evans, and Steve Douglas had prepared for only a few days for this performance. Regardless of this, his gentle rhythms were perfect - and infectious.

The album also features Mike Thorn's double bass. Copies were available at the Church - produced by "Musical Squares" - i.e. Mike & Wendy Gluyas.

"Colours of the Day" (Light Up the Fire)
(Keith Ryecroft, Sue McClellan, John Paculabo)
East Devon Choral Society
The choir then returned for two more songs. First Andrew led a very sombre arrangement (by himself) of Charles Villiers Stanford's "Blue Bird" for female voices and piano only.

The men soon joined in, with full band including Verity's bass guitar, to sing the traditional spiritual (with a distinct, albeit spurious, West Country flavour), "Kum Ba Yah". To ensure that the choir members did not forget which verse they had reached, Andrew mimed the actions at each reprise - a very effective form of direction.

Parchment
Ryecroft, McClellan & Pac
The theme "Colours of Love" had slightly slipped with this campfire song, but the first half ended with a rousing spiritual hymn which combined all of the elements. "Colours of the Day" by 'Parchment' (Keith Ryecroft, Sue McClellan & John Paculabo) - also subtitled "Light up the Fire" - did just that.

The exciting Christian message of Jesus' impending resurrection was expressed jubilantly in words and actions. And the choir were joined at the opportune moment by the full band to end with several exuberant choruses and a final exultant cheer.

Verity Stroud
"When I Saw You
Standing There"
The interval was passed pleasantly in the churchyard, with wine, soft drinks and snacks served in the church centre. After a pleasant half hour in the evening sunlight, the audience returned. Verity welcomed everyone back with an unscheduled rendition of another of Andrew's romantic compositions, "When I Saw You Standing There".

Peter McLean-Buechel
An appeal on behalf of
British Heart Foundation
Then a tenor from the choir introduced the benefit charity. Peter McLean-Buechel has reason to be grateful to the British Heart Foundation for all their help and support when he had cardiac surgery last year. In a witty and moving exposition, he summarised the many benefits provided by the charity.

The Foundation works in all parts of the country, and is currently spending £26M on 87 projects in Exeter and Bristol. They have provided over 2,000 publicly accessible defibrillator units, and supply CPR units to schools. They also fund cardiac nurses, and a 24 hour helpline service. Proceeds from ticket sales go to the charity - along with donations from audience members. Andrew echoed Peter's sentiments - especially applauding the Foundation's work to keep one of his tenors in good health.

The rest of the choir then joined Peter on stage for something a little bit different, Dorothy Gale's impassioned ballad from "The Wizard of Oz", "Over the Rainbow" by Yip Harburg, with music by Harold Arlen (adapted, of course, by Andrew Daldorph). In a more exotic vein, Oswald Durand's Haitian song "Choucoune", set to music by Michel Mauléart Monton, and translated into English as "Yellow Bird" - a delightful contrast to Dorothy's bluebirds.

Henry Mancini: "The Pink Panther"
Drums: Steve Douglas
Piano: Andrew Daldorph
Tenor Saxophone: Chris Gradwell
This entertaining anthropomophic romance, sung by the women and accompanied by male chorus and drums, rekindled the jazzy feel of the evening and set the scene for a classic instrumental jazz number. Steve Douglas provided the ever-familiar brushed cymbal introduction to Henry Mancini's Academy Award winning theme to Blake Edwards'"The Pink Panther". Chris Gradwell's tenor saxophone playing totally recalled Plas Johnson's original - and Andrew's switching between genres was as impressive as ever. A song with everlasting appeal.

Verity Stroud
"Coming Back Home"
Verity joined the band on bass guitar for Sonny Burke's wartime lament "Black Coffee", and sang two more of Andrew's compositions with the band, "And I Want to Hold You" and "I'm Comin' Back Home". Verity's singing reached new heights on intensity, as she poured ever more energy into each word of Andrew's heart wrenching story.

Accolades from the band
for a special new singer
Verity Stroud
Verity's singing was perfectly matched, and complemented, by Chris's skilled saxophone solos, with all four instruments rising and falling in intensity precisely with Verity's mood - and incredible joint effort by four outstanding musicians.

Andrew introduces the men
By way of a total contrast, Andrew then introduced the men of the choir (plus female tenor Cathy Harris) to sing something in a lighter style - and very stylish indeed - "White Shoe Blues" by Jim Page.

Jim Page: White Shoes Blues
The men very ably injected just the right amount of humour and hep into the words and - just at the opportune moment - the entire soprano and alto sections joined in the chorus from the stalls. A brilliant and hilarious embellishment.

The Men's Section
Director: Andrew Daldorph
The whole choir polished off the theme of colours with "Blue Moon" by Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart (with spectacular male-voice continuo) and (with whole-hearted audience participation) "Yellow Submarine" by John Lennon & Paul McCartney. Originally performed by Ringo Starr "Yellow Submarine" offers ample opportunity for comic embellishment, which the choir members provided with voices off, while the audience joined in enthusiastically during the choruses - and most of the verses.

As a fitting finale, and an opportunity for the audience to recover from all the excitement, Verity Stroud ended the concert with another performance of "I'm Comin' Back Home" accompanied by the band. Her contributions had been much appreciated, and audience members made their way hot foot to the table at the exit selling her CDs - and to add to the contributions towards the British Heart Foundation.

The choir return to rehearsals in October, when new members are welcome as ever - especially tenors. The next concert will be at the Baptist Church in Newport Street, Tiverton, on Saturday 9th December: Handel's "Messiah"!

Why "Diva on your Doorstep"?
Since Claudia started her collaboration with "Gli Amici di Fritz", an international opera company based in Italy, she has found that some of her favourite performances have been the ones put on in small villages and towns, where opera isn't normally performed.

That's why she decided to do the same for villages in Devon as it's something she is sure people will enjoy! You'll be able to have a lovely evening of thrilling and beautiful music, not far from home and without thinking about having to drive far or worry about parking.

Claudia and Simon hope to be able to bring their show to more villages in the future, so stay tuned for more!

Finalists at this year’s prestigious Exeter Living Awards, Substance and Shadow Theatre Company return to the Barnfield Theatre this autumn with Mark ORowe’s award winning play, "Howie The Rookie".

"Howie The Rookie" is a nightmare odyssey which follows rivals Howie-Lee, a man on the edge, and his name-sake, Rookie-Lee, on a white-knuckle no-holds-barred ride through the violent streets of working class Dublin, a place where enemies are interchangeable and the most brutal events take on a mythical significance.

In this tale of two halves, we meet unforgettable characters - ranging from 'Ladyboy', the psychotic thug hell-bent on avenging the deaths of his Siamese fighting fish, to the monstrous, belching 'Avalanche', who is looking for love from her bar stool.

Set in a landscape of feverish drinking, casual sex, and visceral violence, "Howie The Rookie" is rich in comedy, and deeply poetic.

Time Out Magazine (New York): “O’Rowe’s hilarious, pimp-rollin’, blood-soaked text has not only [William] Shakespeare’s 'interiority' [i.e. focus on inner life and identity], but also [Christopher] Marlowe’s viciousness - and a cowboy’s jangling gait. It’s got [James] Joyce’s sense of place and [William] Faulkner’s sense of language.”

This rollercoaster, adrenaline-fuelled journey into Dublin’s underworld is an electrifying tale that will out-do the bloodiest of Jacobean tragedies and leave you shocked, stunned and thirsting for more!

Claudia Álvarez Calderón

Peruvian-Italian coloratura soprano Claudia Álvarez Calderón is bringing her unique voice to village halls over South Devon. The Diva on your Doorstep: Access all Arias! tour starts on September 15 in Lustleigh Village Hall. Claudia, who is based in Dartmoor, will perform a programme of opera arias and solo piano pieces with pianist Simon Dunbavand.

She said, "The programme will span from the Baroque period all the way to 20th century Bernstein. It will have very bubbly and exciting operatic arias for coloratura soprano and some solo piano pieces."

Claudia came up the idea for touring Devon village halls after recently touring in Italy.

"At the moment I collaborate with an international opera company based in Italy called Gli Amici di Fritz and we perform in a variety of different venues  around Italy," she said. "Although we get to sing in beautiful theatres, maybe the most satisfying performances have been the ones in small villages in which people are not used to having opera being performed. After the shows they come to us and tell us how happy they are to have quality music being performed on their doorstep. With this in mind, I realised that's something that lacks in small communities in Devon."

"I've been performing in some bigger towns and cities in Devon since I arrived here three years ago but thought it would be lovely to take my shows to people's doorsteps as well. That's why I called my project Diva on your Doorstep! I thought it would also provide a chance for people who maybe don't want to drive all the way to Exeter or Plymouth to listen to quality music."

Singers from choral societies in Exeter, Exmouth and Wellington are undertaking an epic voyage, culminating in a large-scale performance in Exeter Cathedral later this year.

Members of the choirs, who will be joined on stage by the Exeter Symphony Orchestra and their conductor Brian Northcott, have begun rehearsals for a performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Sea Symphony” that will take place on 25th November 2017 and include a fundraising collection in support of the RNLI. (See rnli.org).

Devon-based conductor Laurence Blyth, who is responsible for bringing the 200 singers together, is looking forward to the challenge. Speaking during a visit to the Exmouth RNLI Lifeboat Station last month, he said:

“I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to conduct a large-scale performance of this amazing symphony in such stunning surroundings. Many of the singers won’t have sung in the Cathedral before, and I know that they’re looking forward to the concert already.”

The members of the Exeter Symphony Orchestra are no strangers to Exeter Cathedral, following recent performances of Dvorak’s “Cello Concerto” (with Raphael Wallfisch) and Laura Rossi’s “Battle of the Somme”. They will open the concert in November with Arnold Bax’s tone poem “November Woods” conducted by Brian Northcott.

This Friday's "Classical Journey" programme on Phonic FM will be at 2pm.

The first part of the programme will be dedicated to a discussion with Exeter flautist, Ruth Molins.

Hallsands Revisited

Flute Cake
join Lona & Sam
On Saturday last week (16 September) Ruth and her flute trio, 'Flute Cake' (Ruth Molins, Sophie Brewer& Jennifer Campbell), joined Lona Kozik and Sam Richards at Hallsands on the South Devon coast to revisit the story of Hallsands' collapse into the sea during the storm of January 1917. Together they gave première performances of  "The Ruined Village" by Lona Kozik and "The Night of the Storm and the Rain" by Sam Richards. The latter included a beautifully scored section for 'Flute Cake' to play on toy bells, plus singing by Sam Richards and Soundart Radio Artistic Director, Lucinda Guy.

Whistling Tube & Spring Drum
Sam Richards
This extraordinary recital was performed in a clear-sided marquee on the cliffs above the ruined village, in which were displayed many sea- and fishing-related artworks by Torcross artist Frances Gynn - presented in collaboration with Bill Fletcher-Neal.

The evening's music also included a sensitive and atmospheric electronic ambient piece, "Aqua Marine", composed and presented by Melvyn Bangert.

Improvised Drawing
Frances Gynn
Lona and Sam also played three piano pieces in the first half: Lona's arrangement of Percy Grainger's 1908 setting of retired sailor John Perring's Dartington sea shanty, "Stormalong", a live version of Lona's multi-track piano composition "Drift" (as a four-hand, played by Lona and Sam), and "Ghost Nets", an improvisation involving Sam's bowed tam tam, whistling tube and spring drum, and Lona's prepared piano containing several acoustically active objects, including wildly dancing ping-pong balls. Frances Gynn took part in the improvisation, creating an original image on black paper with white pastels.

Sam Richards' fascinating one-hour musical documentary for Soundart Radio, "Hallsands", featuring Lona Kozik, Elie Fruchter, Lucinda Guy, and many other Soundart stars, is still available at Lona's Mixcloud Page.

Courtlands House, 6 September 2013
Ruth, Sophie & Jennifer will be performing again, during October and November, at three different venues in Exeter. Ruth has composed a fascinating, semi-improvised piece, "Make Room", for performance in any building. The audience follow the musicians through rooms and corridors, while the flutes weave music to fit any environment. This very adventurous approach to musical presentation has already been experienced by appreciative audiences in Ruth's own home. New venues already booked are the Waterstones bookshop on Cathedral Green (7 October), the café in The Glorious Art House (which is half-way down Fore Street in Exeter - 22 October), and Veronica Gosling's 'Studio 36' at 36 Denmark Road (5 November). (Full details below.)

First seen in concert together in 2015 ("A Breath of Fresh Air"), flautist Ruth Molins and pianist Alex Wilson will be collaborating again in October. Their new concert tour is called "This Music is Yours" and features compositions by Cornishman Graham Fitkin, Kentish man Ian Clarke, and Parisian Francis Poulenc. Ruth and Alex have also included music by three female composers, Anne Boyd, Claude Arrieu and Ruth Molins herself. The first concert will be on Sunday this week, across the border in Somerset. Two weeks later they will be closer to home, in Bradninch near Cullompton (Sunday 8 October). Their final concert will be here in Exeter in the Baptist Church at the bottom of South Street (Saturday 28 October). (Full details below.)

Substance & Shadow Theatre Company Present "Howie the Rookie" Exeter Barnfield Theatre Tuesday 10 October, Wednesday 11 October, & Friday 13 October 2017

The Howie & The Rookie
(Midge Mullin & Si Cook)
Two Dublin namesakes
with a shocking tale to tell

Rosie and Midge Mullin's "Substance & Shadow" Theatre Company move in a new direction this week. Following on from the slapstick humour and political intrigues of "Brexit Club" earlier this year, they now move on to something decidedly darker.

"Howie the Rookie" (Mark O'Rowe, for his mother Patricia, 1999), in the hands of Rosie and Midge, with new collaborator Si Cook, is a masterpiece of minimalism. The stage is devoid of all props, save a box to sit on. The music (composed by Si and Finn Cook) is a simple and ominous pulse, commanding attention without fanfare. The sound and lighting are controlled by Samantha Taylor with deft discretion, barely disturbing the action on stage. Over all, Rosie Mullin's direction insists on a single track of thought without deviation or distraction.

Our two main protagonists, Howie Lee and Rookie Lee (unrelated), never meet on stage (except for their curtain call - see above). Instead, each describes how the other features in their own life, in remarkably intense soliloquy. At first their lives seem hardly to intersect, but an apparently trivial act of revenge leads to a much closer relationship resulting from two other, quite separate tragedies.

Midge, as The Howie Lee, begins the tale, building the catalogue of memories deliberately like the laying of so many bricks. No observation is omitted, however sordid. Every bodily function is recalled in vivid detail. The events he relates seem almost inconsequential, concentrating mainly on his unsatisfactory relationships with women (including the unforgettable 'Avalanche', who we meet only in his descriptions). The odd revenge exacted on his namesake, The Rookie Lee, seems almost coincidental, as do the cameo appearances of Flan Dingle& 'Ginger Boy' cruising the streets in their green van.

Despite their apparent simplicity, Howie's recollections suddenly take a shocking and grievous turn, leaving the audience stunned. As Midge leaves the stage you could hear a pin drop. Sundry extraneous sounds from the foyer fail to register. The interval passes in a daze.

Now Si, as The Rookie Lee, takes up the tale. The vengeance of Howie and his gang is dismissed lightly. Rookie seems unsure what prompted it, and equally unconcerned. He has much more serious worries on his mind. Almost comically accrued debts put him in mortal danger from another, so far unmentioned character. Suddenly Howie reappears in a new rôle, along with Avalanche and her brother 'Peaches', not to mention Flan & Ginger Boy. All draw together to participate in gruelling final act of this daemonic drama.

If Howie's closing revelations were stunning, the culmination of Rookie's tale is devastating. This is a play not to be taken lightly. Both actors are totally focussed and are the focus of attention for a full ninety minutes. Their revelations hit the audience like a series of storm surges, leaving no time for recovery before each successive assault on the senses.

"Brace for impact."

"Howie the Rookie" will be showing in the Clifford Room at the Barnfield Theatre on two more nights this week - Wednesday & Friday at 8pm. More performances at other venues must surely follow.

EMG Symphony Orchestra 50th Anniversary Concert Exeter Cathedral Friday 3 November 2017 Press Release from Ellen Stratton

EMG Symphony Orchestra
Exeter Cathedral
Friday 3 November 7.30pm
(Photography: Nigel Cheffers-Heard)

On Friday 3rd November join EMG SymphonyOrchestra and Music Director Leo Geyer at Exeter Cathedral for the orchestra’s 50th anniversary celebratory concert, generously supported by Exeter City Council and Exeter Business Improvement District.  This promises to be a fabulous evening which is not to be missed!

This concert of English music opens with Sir Arnold Bax’s stormy tone poem "Tintagel", followed by the premiere of "Exeter Cityscapes", a symphonic suite by local composer Alfie Pugh, which has been specially commissioned to celebrate EMG’s 50th anniversary

Alfie Pugh, an Exeter-based freelance musician, has won multiple awards for composition including the Charities Philharmonia Young ComposersCompetition 2011, and the Symphonic Wind Orchestra of North London’s Composition Competition 2014.  He has enjoyed success working on the preservation of the music of Barry Gray, whose soundtrack to Thunderbirds was recently rerecorded from scores partly prepared by Alfie, and went to number one in the Japanese classical charts.

For the second half of the concert the orchestra is joined by the EMG Singers under the baton of Associate Conductor Tony Hindley for Sir Hubert Parry’s "I Was Glad".

The concert concludes with Sir Edward Elgar’s "Enigma Variations", re-imagined for chorus and orchestra by EMG Musical Director Leo Geyer, and featuring soloists Heloise West and Michael Graham

Leo Geyer
(Photography:
Nigel Cheffers-Heard)
After completing the initially titled "Variations on an Original Theme", Elgar resolved to add the title ‘Enigma’, suggesting that there is an enigmatic secret hidden in the piece. During his lifetime he hinted at some clues to solve the implied puzzle, and though various solutions were proposed, Elgar accepted none and took the secret to the grave. Drawing on the commonly held belief that the opening phrase of the theme mirrors the rhythm of Elgar’s name, Leo’s re-imagining presents Elgar himself as the ‘Enigma’, an ideal artistic genius, personified in the text of Arthur OShaughnessy’s "Ode", (the text Elgar used in his choral work "The Music Makers"). To complete the Enigma Variations puzzle, the chorus act as the missing piece, singing the Ode to represent Elgar himself.

There will be a retiring collection in aid of Exeter Dementia Action Alliance, part of the national Dementia Action Alliance network, which seeks to empower people living with dementia and their families, raise awareness of dementia and is working towards making Exeter a dementia-friendly city.
